Choquequirao Trek

Visit to Choquequirao and Machu Picchu

5 Stars - Based on 552 Client Reviews

The site of Choquequirao is another lost city of the Incas that is hidden high on a ridge above the raging glacier-fed Apurimac River, surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The intricacy of these majestic ruins suggests that Choquequirao was once of high importance to the Inca Empire. Before a bridge was constructed over the Apruimac River the site was remote and mostly inaccessible. Now you can explore this fascinating site on a spectacular 4-day adventure.

Itinerary

The journey begins with an early morning departure from Cusco, embarking on a four-hour drive toward the Andean community of Cachora. Along the way, we stop at Tarawasi, an important Inca ritual center built during the reign of Pachacutec, where finely carved stone terraces hint at its ceremonial past. Continuing onward, we arrive in Cachora (2,800 m / 9,184 ft), where we enjoy breakfast before setting off on the trek.

The first stretch of the hike takes two and a half hours to reach Abra Capuliyoc (2,750 m / 9,020 ft), a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the Apurímac River Canyon, with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. From here, we begin a long descent toward the river, winding down steep trails until we reach the bridge that leads to Santa Rosa, where we pause for lunch and a well-earned rest. The final challenge of the day is the ascent to Marampata, where we arrive in the late afternoon and set up camp for the night, surrounded by stunning views of the canyon and the promise of Choquequirao ahead.

After an early breakfast at Marampata, the trek continues with a two-hour hike toward the breathtaking Inca citadel of Choquequirao (3,103 m / 10,178 ft). As we approach, the ruins gradually emerge from the lush, misty landscape, revealing the grand terraces, temples, and stone structures that make this site one of the most remarkable yet remote Inca cities.

Upon arrival, there is ample time to explore the vast complex, wandering through its intricate terraces, ceremonial plazas, and mysterious stonework while learning about its history and significance. As the sun begins to set, the canyon below is bathed in golden light, offering a perfect opportunity to witness the majestic flight of Andean condors gliding over the cliffs. The night is spent at the Choquequirao campsite, where the silence of the mountains and the star-filled sky create an unforgettable setting for rest and reflection.

The day begins with breakfast at camp, followed by a final opportunity to explore the ruins of Choquequirao. In the quiet morning hours, the site takes on an even more mystical atmosphere, with the possibility of witnessing the majestic flight of condors soaring over the vast Apurímac Canyon. After soaking in the last views of this incredible Inca citadel, we begin our descent toward the Apurímac River, retracing the winding trail down the canyon walls.

Upon reaching Playa Rosalina, we take a well-earned break to enjoy lunch in this scenic riverside setting. The journey then continues with a final ascent to Chiquisca, where we settle into our last campsite of the trek. Here, surrounded by the warm climate of the lower valley, we can rest beneath the stars, reflecting on the breathtaking landscapes and rewarding experiences of the past days.

The final day of the Choquequirao Trek begins with an early breakfast, fueling up for the last stretch of the journey. The morning hike follows a steady ascent along the rugged Andean trails, retracing the path toward Capuliyoc. As we climb, the landscapes shift once more, offering sweeping views of the Apurímac Canyon, the distant snow-capped peaks, and the winding river far below. The 4-hour hike brings us to the Capuliyoc lookout point, where we will pause to take in the breathtaking scenery one last time before enjoying a well-earned final meal together.

After lunch, the trail continues downhill toward the town of Cachora, where our trek officially comes to an end. Here, our transport will be waiting to take us back to Cusco, offering time to reflect on the incredible journey through history, nature, and remote Inca landscapes. The drive back allows for one last look at the Andean highlands, with an expected arrival in Cusco by late afternoon, marking the conclusion of this unforgettable adventure.
