We begin the day with an early departure from Cusco, setting out on a scenic four-hour drive toward the Andean community of Cachora (2,800 m / 9,184 ft). Upon arrival, we enjoy a hearty breakfast, fueling up for the journey ahead.
Our trek starts with a two-and-a-half-hour ascent to Abra Capuliyoc (2,750 m / 9,020 ft), a spectacular vantage point offering sweeping views of the Apurímac River Canyon and the towering peaks beyond. From here, we begin our descent toward the river, following winding trails through rugged terrain. Upon reaching Santa Rosa, we take a break for lunch, surrounded by the breathtaking natural beauty of the canyon.
With renewed energy, we continue our climb toward Marampata, where our first campsite awaits. As we ascend, we pass through landscapes rich in Andean flora and fauna, with stunning views at every turn. Upon arrival at Marampata, we settle in for the night, where the clear mountain skies provide an unforgettable backdrop of brilliant stars stretching over the canyon below.
After breakfast at Marampata, we set out on a two-hour trek to the spectacular archaeological site of Choquequirao (3,103 m / 10,178 ft). As we arrive, the sheer scale of the ruins unfolds before us—vast terraces, ceremonial plazas, and intricate stonework, all nestled high above the Apurímac Canyon. This hidden Inca city, still largely unexplored, offers a rare glimpse into the engineering mastery and spiritual depth of its builders.
We take our time to explore, wandering through the expansive complex, tracing the steep agricultural terraces, and discovering the sacred spaces where the Incas once gathered. As the afternoon light shifts, we find a quiet vantage point to take in the stunning canyon views, where Andean condors often soar overhead. The play of light on the surrounding mountains creates an unforgettable sunset, casting a golden glow over the ancient stones.
As night falls, we settle into our campsite near the ruins, surrounded by the silence of the mountains. With clear skies above, the Milky Way stretches across the horizon, offering a breathtaking display of stars. Here, in the heart of the Andes, the past feels close, and the timeless energy of Choquequirao lingers in the air.
We begin the day with a breathtaking sunrise over the Apurímac Canyon, as the first light illuminates the towering peaks around us. After a hearty breakfast, we set out on today’s trek, making our way through the heart of Choquequirao one last time before ascending into lush cloud forests, rugged mountain passes, and peaceful valleys. Our path leads us to the Choquequirao Pass, where we pause to take in the stunning scenery stretching across the Andean landscape.
The trail continues for five hours as we descend toward the agricultural terraces of Pinchinoyoc. Along the way, we’ll pass through an ecological paradise, where vibrant orchids bloom, native birds call from the trees, and local coca plantations dot the hillsides. Eventually, we arrive at Rio Blanco, a perfect spot to rest and enjoy a well-deserved lunch by the crystal-clear waters. For those feeling adventurous, a dip in the river offers a refreshing break before we prepare for the next challenge.
Crossing the river carefully—without the aid of a bridge—we begin a three-hour climb up the mountainside, where the terrain grows steeper and more demanding. Step by step, we ascend toward Maizal (3,000 m / 9,842 ft), our campsite for the night. From this elevated perch, we take in panoramic views of the sacred Apus of the Incas, their jagged peaks silhouetted against the evening sky. As night falls, we settle into camp, surrounded by the stillness of the high Andes, ready to rest beneath a vast expanse of stars.
We begin the day waking to the sounds of nature and enjoying a nourishing breakfast before setting out on our ascent toward Victoria Pass. The trail winds through lush green landscapes, where we’ll encounter remnants of ancient Inca canals and the historic silver mines of Minas Victoria. As we gain elevation, the scenery transitions from cloud forest to the open Andean highlands, where the golden Ichu grass sways in the wind. After about seven hours of steady climbing, we reach Victoria Pass (4,200 m / 13,773 ft), where breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, including Choquetakarpo and Pedrayoc, make the challenge worthwhile. Here, we pause for a well-earned lunch while keeping an eye on the sky—if we’re lucky, we may witness condors soaring above the valley.
From the pass, we begin our descent toward the small village of Yamana (3,800 m / 12,467 ft), nestled in a vast valley surrounded by towering mountains. As we arrive at our campsite, we take in the peaceful surroundings and unwind after a demanding day on the trail. As night falls, the crisp mountain air and clear skies reveal a dazzling expanse of stars, offering a serene end to our day’s journey.
We begin the day with a hearty breakfast at our Yamana (3,800 m / 12,467 ft) campsite, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature and the distant rush of a waterfall. Setting out on our trek, we ascend toward the Yamana Pass (4,700 m / 15,419 ft), the highest point of our journey. The five-hour climb takes us through rugged Andean landscapes, where we’ll see local farmers tending their potato fields, a testament to their resilience in this harsh environment. As we approach the pass, we are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Saqsarayoc and Pedreyoc mountain ranges, and if fortune favors us, we may once again witness condors soaring above the valley.
From the pass, we begin our descent into the Santa Teresa Valley, where the snow-capped peaks of Salkantay Mountain dominate the skyline. The trail winds through misty grasslands, crossing small streams and wooden bridges, leading us to Totora, where we pause for a well-deserved lunch. Energized, we continue our descent into warmer terrain, eventually arriving at Colpapampa (2,900 m / 9,514 ft), where we settle into our campsite for the night, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of the cloud forest.
We begin the day with an early breakfast before setting off on our trek through the lush high jungle, known as the Ceja de Selva. As we make our way toward La Playa, our lunch stop, we pass through vibrant landscapes filled with coca, coffee, and fruit plantations. The region’s rich biodiversity comes to life with colorful orchids, begonias, and a variety of tropical birds adding to the beauty of the trail.
After lunch, we continue our descent, gradually leaving the highlands behind. A short bus ride of approximately two hours brings us to the charming village of Santa Teresa, where we settle in for the evening. Here, we enjoy a well-deserved dinner before resting for the night, surrounded by the tranquil ambiance of the jungle.
After breakfast, we board our transport to the hydroelectric plant, the starting point of our trek into Machu Picchu National Park. From here, we set out on foot toward Aguas Calientes, passing through the Intihuatana area, where we pause to explore a small but significant archaeological site. Our guide will share insights into its history and significance, adding to the anticipation of what lies ahead.
Continuing along the trail, we arrive at Inka Rakay, where we enjoy a well-earned lunch while admiring the breathtaking views of Huayna Picchu and the surrounding mountains. As we walk, we catch glimpses of hidden archaeological sites, offering a preview of the wonders awaiting us. By late afternoon, we reach Aguas Calientes, where we settle into our accommodations for the night. The lively town provides the perfect place to relax before the grand finale of our journey—our visit to Machu Picchu the next day.
Today is the highlight of our journey as we visit one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site—Machu Picchu! Rising early, we aim to reach the site before the crowds, either by hiking up or taking the optional bus. As we step into this legendary city, our guide will lead us through its most fascinating areas, from the sacred temples and royal quarters to the farming terraces and intricate water channels that sustained the Inca inhabitants.
After ample time to explore and take in the breathtaking views, we descend to Aguas Calientes in the afternoon. From here, we board the train to Ollantaytambo, enjoying a scenic ride through the Andean landscape. At Ollantaytambo, our transport will be waiting to take us back to Cusco, where we conclude our incredible adventure, carrying with us unforgettable memories of this extraordinary journey.
