We depart Lima in the morning for our flight to Juliaca, ascending into the stark landscape of the high Altiplano. Our first stop is Sillustani, an ancient site overlooking the enigmatic Lake Umayo. We will focus our attention on the “cut stone” towers, where massive blocks exhibit the same mortarless, interlocking precision seen at the world’s most famous megalithic sites. We’ll examine the varying construction styles—from crude fieldstone to masterfully smoothed, curved surfaces.
In the afternoon, we head onto Lake Titicaca via private boat to visit the Uros Floating Islands. This visit offers a look at a different form of ingenuity: the construction of man-made islands from layered totora reeds. We will spend time walking the buoyant platforms and learning how these communities have maintained their traditional way of life on the water for generations. It is a fascinating example of long-term environmental adaptation and serves as a relaxed introduction to the lake before we return to Puno for the evening.
Right on the shores of Lake Titicaca, this Casa Andina Premium has everything that you need to make the most of your trip to Puno. This is the perfect place to relax as you travel through Peru.
Today we’ll travel south from Puno to Inka Qamaña, a sprawling complex of carved bedrock and massive terraces that suggests a profound, long-term modification of the natural landscape. We will explore the “seats” and strange geometric niches carved directly into the living rock, examining the precision of these features and how they integrate with the surrounding geology. The sheer scale of the stone-shaping here offers a compelling look at an ancient culture that viewed the earth itself as a medium for monumental architecture.
Our journey continues to the enigmatic Aramu Muru, a massive seven-meter-tall “portal” carved into a solid rock face. We will analyze the craftsmanship of this T-shaped niche and its perfectly smoothed surfaces, comparing its design to other rock-cut anomalies across the Andes. We conclude the day at Inca Uyo in Chucuito, focusing on the precision-fit masonry and the site’s orientation along the southern shore of the lake before returning to Puno for the evening.

Today we depart Puno for a day focused on the sophisticated stone-shaping and large-scale terraforming of the northern Lake Titicaca basin. Our first stop is Cutimbo, a significant complex situated atop a dramatic mesa. Here, we examine massive stone structures that exhibit remarkable architectural features: curved corners, interlocking joints, and unique animal reliefs carved with high-relief precision. The site’s elevated position and the sheer quality of the masonry—characterized by perfectly fitted blocks—demonstrate a specialized engineering logic that utilized the natural geology of the mesa to create a formidable presence on the landscape.
Continuing to the Chullpas de Molloco, we explore a variety of structures that showcase a fascinating range of masonry styles, from fieldstone assemblies to high-precision megalithic blocks. This juxtaposition provides a physical record of the different construction techniques employed in the Altiplano over vast periods. We conclude the day overlooking the Waru Waru fields, an expansive ancient raised-field system. This represents a massive feat of hydraulic engineering and environmental modification, showcasing a sophisticated mastery of the Altiplano’s unique climate and topography. We’ll return to Puno in the early evening where you’ll have the rest of the evening free.

We depart Puno and travel toward the Bolivian border, following the scenic shoreline of Lake Titicaca to the town of Copacabana. After lunch, we begin exploring the peninsula at Chukuperqa. This site is home to remarkable rock-cut features, most notably the “Horca del Inca,” where massive stone beams are wedged between natural rock pillars. We will examine the precise geometry of these placements and the surrounding carved niches, which function as a sophisticated astronomical observatory tuned to the solar cycles of the Altiplano.
In the afternoon, we continue to Iwawe (Ihuata), a significant ceremonial center that offers a deeper look into the regional stone-shaping tradition. The site features planned architecture and defined ceremonial spaces that exhibit a clear technical relationship to the larger monuments found elsewhere in the Titicaca basin. We will analyze the masonry styles and the layout of the complex, discussing how Iwawe fits into the broader network of high-altitude sacred sites and the advanced engineering knowledge shared among them. We return to Copacabana in the late afternoon for a relaxed evening.
A colonial style hotel where rooms have great views of Lake Titicaca, at Hotel Rosario Lago Titicaca guests can enjoy barbequed meals outside in the garden or relax in the lounge area where there are various games seating and a cozy fireplace.
We’ll spend the day exploring Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna via private boat, navigating the high-altitude waters of Lake Titicaca to reach these primary ceremonial hubs. On the Island of the Sun, we focus on the Chinkana, a complex “labyrinth” of stone walls and corridors featuring high-precision niches and multi-level construction. We will examine the massive stone foundations and the Titikala (Sacred Rock), analyzing the site’s layout as a sophisticated center of administration and observation that utilized the island’s unique topography.
On the Island of the Moon, we visit the Iñak Uyu, or Temple of the Moon. Here, we examine the distinctive “stepped” architectural motifs and the precision of the stone-fitted facades. The day is dedicated to analyzing these islands as a connected network of monumental sites, focusing on the structural logic, the transport of building materials across the lake, and the long-term architectural continuity found within the Titicaca basin. We return to Copacabana in the late afternoon for a comfortable second evening on the peninsula.

We depart Copacabana and travel south to Chiripa, a site featuring unique semi-subterranean architecture and sunken courts. We will examine the distinctive double-walled construction and the precision of the stone-lined chambers, which exhibit a clear geometric template found throughout the region’s most significant sites. This stop serves as a technical introduction to the sophisticated spatial planning used across the Altiplano before we reach the heart of the megalithic world.
The rest of the day is dedicated to the massive architectural anomalies of Tiwanaku and Puma Punku. At Tiwanaku, we will examine the Akapana and the Gate of the Sun, focusing on the precision of the andesite carvings and the interlocking joinery. At Puma Punku, we move into the most technically challenging masonry on the planet, studying the “H-blocks,” the perfectly flat surfaces, and the right-angled interior cuts that characterize the site. We will spend the afternoon analyzing the sheer scale of these 100-ton blocks and the mechanical exactness of their finish before crossing back into Peru for a late arrival in Puno.

Today concludes our exploration of the Lake Titicaca region of Peru and Bolivia. Those of you who are finishing their trip here will be transfered to the Juliaca airport for your flight to Lima where you can connect with your international flight home. For participants continuing on for the Cusco extension, this day marks the transition from the high-altitude Altiplano to the dramatic mountains of the Cusco region.
Today we will travel overland from Puno toward Cusco. Our first stop is Pucará, a site characterized by its sunken courts and sophisticated lithic style. At the site and its museum, we will examine the finely carved stelae and geometric stone slabs, focusing on the specific iconography and technical similarities to the masonry found at Tiwanaku.
Continuing north, we reach the towering remains of the Temple of Viracocha at Raqchi. This site features a series of massive vertical pillars and a central wall standing over 12 meters high, constructed with a heavy stone foundation supporting precisely shaped adobe. Our day concludes at the Huaro Museum, home to the “Wayki” mummy. This provides a rare opportunity to examine an anomaly that has sparked significant debate regarding the biological and cultural diversity of ancient Andean lineages. Finally we will continue on to Cusco to settle into our hotel. Participants not joining the Lake Titicaca portion of the tour will arrive directly in Cusco today and meet the group at the hotel in the evening.
Novotel Cusco blends colonial charm with modern comforts. The spacious rooms come with Wi-Fi. At Restaurant 365, enjoy international cuisine and a bar with a pisco sour demonstration. During your stay, explore the rich history and culture of the City of the Incas.
We begin our exploration in the heart of Cusco, focusing on the layers of history visible in the city’s architecture. We will examine the massive, precision-cut stone foundations that serve as the base for later colonial structures, analyzing the contrast between the various styles of masonry. A key stop is the Coricancha, where we can observe some of the most exacting stonework in the world, featuring perfectly fitted blocks and interior niches that exhibit a level of mechanical precision often compared to modern industrial standards.
The primary focus of the day is the monumental complex of Sacsayhuaman. We will spend significant time walking the zig-zagging terrace walls, which are composed of limestone blocks weighing over 100 tons. We will examine the seamless joinery and the “pillowed” finish of these massive stones, discussing the logistical challenges of transporting and positioning such immense weights on a steep hillside. Rather than rushing through multiple sites, we prioritize a deep investigation into the geometry and scale of this site. After we are finished exploring we will head back to our hotel where we will have the rest of the evening free.

Today we’ll depart the city and descend into the Sacred Valley, beginning at the hilltop complex of Pisac. Our primary focus is the Intihuatana sector, where we will examine the high-precision, interlocking stonework that surrounds the sacred outcrops. We’ll analyze how the massive blocks are seamlessly integrated into the living bedrock and the technical expertise required to achieve such exact tolerances on a steep mountain ridge, far above the valley floor.
Next, we visit the enigmatic Ñaupa Iglesia, an ancient shrine carved directly into a cave on the valley floor. This site features a “false door” or portal and a large, black stone altar carved with geometric precision that stands in stark contrast to the rough natural cave walls. We then continue to Ollantaytambo, often called the “Living City.” Our investigation will focus on the Temple of the Sun and the “Wall of the Six Monoliths,” where massive pink rhyolite blocks, weighing many tons, were transported across a river and high up a mountain. We will examine the T-shaped stone joins and the perfectly flat finishes before boarding the evening train to Aguas Calientes.
Inkaterra El Mapi has a modern building design that makes you feel like you’re in a large metropolitan area, the spa and healthy buffet style breakfast will prepare you for a perfect Machu Picchu visit.
Our day begins with a comprehensive guided tour of Circuit 2, the most iconic route through the citadel. Together, we’ll explore the “Classic” highlights, including the famous postcard views from the Guardhouse, the Sun Temple, and the Sacred Plaza. After a detailed exploration of the upper sector of the citadel, travelers who prefer a more relaxed visit will continue on to Circuit 3 to visit the fascinating lower sector of the citadel and the Temple of the Condor.
For those seeking a deeper adventure, we offer an optional trek to the Temple of the Moon (The Great Cavern). Tucked away on the far side of Huayna Picchu, this megalithic site features some of the most impressive and mysterious stonework in the entire sanctuary, built directly into a natural cave. Please be aware that this is a strenuous hike involving steep “Inca stairs” and narrow trails. Because this route passes directly through the lower sector, hikers will also visit Circuit 3 along the way. Due to its location and seasonal weather patterns, this route is only open during specific parts of the year. While the climb is demanding, the reward is a rare visit to an incredible site far removed from the main crowds—a true “off-the-beaten-path” experience for the physically prepared.

Excellent service, great coordination, nice hotels. Everything was smooth as could be.
My husband and I did a day trip to see Machu Picchu, which has been a dream of mine for over 10 years, at the end of January this year. Once we were in Cusco and the day before the trip the team came by and explained everthing and there were no hazzle on the day of our trip either. The day was perfect and it was truly a dream come true thanks to Cusco Native.
My tour was back in October but I still think about the incredible service we received from Cusco Native, specifically Diego who helped us out immensely 🙌🏼 Every part of the trip ran smoothly and I would highly recommend the use of this wonderful company.
My wife and I did truly enjoy our visit and the team was more than excellent at taking care of us during the trip. Everyone was communicating well as to what the next steps were and who we were meeting next along our journey. We also appreciate your team accommodating us as we were traveling to Cusco, especially due to the multiple flight delays that occurred.
