Hotel:
Hilton Garden Inn Miraflores

Hilton Garden Inn Miraflores has luxury rooms and a great location close to the touristic center and the ocean.

Your adventure begins with a journey south along Peru’s starkly beautiful desert coastline, leaving behind Lima’s modern bustle and entering landscapes where ancient cultures once thrived. The drive leads toward Pisco, gateway to valleys that sustained great civilizations, and onward to Tambo Colorado, one of the most important coastal Inca sites. Here, sun-dried adobe walls painted in vivid reds, whites, and yellows still stand, a reminder of how the Incas extended their reach into even the driest regions. Walking through its plazas and corridors is a first taste of Peru’s remarkable ability to blend highland and coastal traditions into one cultural tapestry.

From there, the desert unveils one of its most puzzling wonders: the Band of Holes. Stretching for kilometers across the barren hills, thousands of perfectly carved depressions form a mysterious path that no scholar has fully explained. Some theories suggest food storage or boundary markers, others point to ceremonial or astronomical uses. Whatever their origin, they set the tone for the days ahead — this is a land of enigmas. As the sun sinks into the Pacific, you arrive in Paracas, where the ocean breeze offers a gentle welcome and the first evening’s rest prepares you for the unfolding exploration.

Hotel:
Casa Andina Select Paracas

Found on the seafront and with a large pool, this Casa Andina is perfect for relaxing in, as well as an excellent point to base yourself for while exploring Ica in comfort and style.

The day begins on the waters of Paracas Bay, where the boat ride out to the Ballestas Islands passes the famous Candelabra — a vast geoglyph etched into the sandy hillside, visible only from the sea. Its origins are uncertain, with theories linking it to the Paracas people, ancient navigators, or even astronomical alignments. The mystery of the Candelabra sets the mood perfectly before reaching the islands themselves, where sea lions, penguins, and countless seabirds crowd the cliffs, showing how nature and culture have always intertwined along this coast.

Returning to land, the desert reveals new wonders with a stop in Huacachina for lunch by the shimmering lagoon, surrounded by towering sand dunes. After this pause, the route continues inland, leaving the oasis behind for the rugged valleys that shelter La Ciudad Perdida de Huayurí, an abandoned stone city whose walls and terraces still hint at forgotten lifeways. By late afternoon, the drive leads onward to Nazca, where an optional visit to the Museo Antonini offers artifacts and models that bring context to the Nazca culture’s monumental achievements. Night settles in Nazca, where the stage is set for the great geoglyphs awaiting you the next morning.

Hotel:
Casa Andina Standard Nasca

Friendly and efficient staff, this Casa Andina is close to the center of Nasca and boasts large, spacious rooms with plenty of restaurants and bars close by as well as a swimming pool to soak in.

The day opens with the much-anticipated overflight of the Nazca Lines. From above, colossal figures of animals, plants, and geometric patterns stretch across the desert floor, their precision still defying simple explanation. The flight offers a rare perspective — a glimpse into the vast vision of the Nazca culture and their relationship with land, sky, and cosmos. Each figure invites speculation, whether as ceremonial pathways, astronomical calendars, or messages to the gods.

Back on the ground, the ingenuity of the Nazca is further revealed at the Cantalloc aqueducts, where spiral channels plunge into the earth to access underground water — a system still functional centuries later. A visit to the Chauchilla Cemetery brings another dimension: rows of open tombs where ancient mummies rest, preserved by the desert climate. The woven textiles, cranial modifications, and burial offerings here connect visitors directly to the human side of Nazca society, balancing the grandeur of their geoglyphs with the intimacy of daily life and death.

The road back north offers time for reflection as the desert and ocean accompany the drive toward Lima. A stop in Paracas provides a pause for lunch, and also a chance to reconnect with the area’s cultural heart. Depending on the chosen route, there is the option to visit either the Julio Tello Museum, which showcases the artistry and burial traditions of the Paracas culture, or the Juan Navarro Museum, known for its collection of elongated skulls that fuel debate about the practices and beliefs of ancient societies.

By evening, the journey circles back into the capital. After days tracing the footsteps of coastal civilizations and exploring enigmatic geoglyphs, the energy of Peru’s past lingers in every vista and ruin. This pre-tour adventure has set the stage for what is to come: the highlands, sacred valleys, and monumental sites of the Andes await, promising encounters with Inca marvels, megalithic architecture, and landscapes that have inspired awe for centuries.

We’ll begin the day with an early transfer to the Lima airport for our flight to Cusco, landing in the heart of the Andes. Upon arrival, we’ll head to our hotel, giving us time to settle in and begin adjusting to the high altitude.

After lunch, our first visit is to Coricancha, the legendary Temple of the Sun. Though much of its original structure was replaced by colonial architecture, sections of the original stonework remain—precisely cut and flawlessly fitted without mortar, leaving no space for even a strand of hair between the massive blocks. The origins of this extraordinary construction remain a mystery, with theories ranging from advanced ancient engineering to lost civilizations.

Next, we’ll explore the Inca Museum, home to a fascinating array of artifacts including finely crafted pottery, intricate textiles, and a collection of strange, elongated skulls. These peculiar specimens, along with other relics, offer a glimpse into ancient cultures whose histories and capabilities are still subjects of debate and intrigue.

We’ll finish the day with a walking tour of Cusco’s historic center, winding through its narrow cobblestone streets and lively plazas. Here, colonial buildings stand atop far older foundations, offering a vivid contrast between two vastly different eras layered within the same cityscape.

Hotel:
Hotel San Agustin Dorado

Located on the main avenue of the city and only one block from the famous Qoricancha temple, Hotel San Agustin Dorado is a great hotel with an exceptional attention to detail.

Today we will visit some lesser-known and mysterious constructions found in the Peruvian highlands outside Cusco. We will have the chance to visit the following sites:

Maukallacta

Maukallacta, meaning “Ancient Town” in Quechua, is an enigmatic site in the highlands of the Cusco region. The site features finely constructed stone structures, ceremonial plazas, and terraces that hint at advanced engineering techniques. Some believe it was a center for spiritual rituals, possibly dedicated to Viracocha, the great creator deity. Its strategic location offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, adding to its aura of mystery.

Puma Orqo

Puma Orqo, or “Puma Mountain,” is a fascinating site near Cusco with significant symbolic and energetic importance. Its name suggests a connection to the sacred puma, a key figure in Andean cosmology. The site contains large, precisely carved stones and rock formations that some researchers believe depict pumas or other sacred figures. Many theorists suggest that Puma Orqo, like other megalithic sites in the region, was built by an ancient advanced civilization. Its alignment with celestial events and the possibility of lost knowledge encoded in its construction make it a compelling location for those exploring the mysteries of prehistory.

Begin your day with a visit to Qenqo, an intriguing archaeological site just outside Cusco. Featuring carved rock formations and underground passageways, this enigmatic site holds deep cultural significance. While the purpose and origins of Qenqo are debated, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the mysterious past of the region.

Next, visit the imposing ruins of Sacsayhuamán, a massive complex known for its remarkable stonework, with some stones weighing over 100 tons. The precision with which these enormous blocks were cut and fitted together continues to spark curiosity and debate about the advanced techniques used to construct this site. Regardless of how and when it was built, the grandeur of Sacsayhuamán is undeniable.

After a day of exploring these awe-inspiring sites, return to your hotel to relax and reflect on the day’s discoveries.

Known for its expansive terraces and stunning views, Pisac is a highlight of the region. As you wander through the ancient structures, take your time to admire the remarkable stonework and intricate designs that have withstood the test of time.

A key highlight of your visit will be the Intihuatana Zone, where you’ll find the iconic carved stone believed to have been an ancient astronomical tool. This area holds deep spiritual and cultural significance, and its origins continue to be a topic of great interest and speculation.

After a full day of discovery in Pisac, return to your accommodation for a relaxing evening.

Following a restful morning, we’ll embark on a journey to two captivating destinations: Ñaupa Iglesia and Ollantaytambo, both offering intriguing insights into the world of ancient architectural wonders.

Our first stop is Ñaupa Iglesia, a site of profound mystery nestled at the mouth of a cave within the rugged Andean landscape. Here, we’ll encounter meticulous craftwork etched into colossal stones—an enduring testament to a civilization from a distant past. As we explore these megalithic wonders, we’ll be struck by the precision and craftsmanship that defy conventional explanation. The purpose and origin of Ñaupa Iglesia remain unknown, but the spiritual energy of the place is unmistakable, inviting us to reflect on its enigmatic legacy.

Continuing on, we arrive at Ollantaytambo, a town where ancient engineering and living tradition merge seamlessly. Towering stone terraces, intricately carved walls, and an advanced urban layout all speak to the ingenuity of its builders. As we walk through this extraordinary site, we’ll marvel at the enormous blocks of stone fitted together with such skill that not even a hair could slip between them.

From Ollantaytambo, we’ll board the train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, we’ll check in to our hotel and take a moment to settle in. In the evening, we’ll come together for a celebratory farewell dinner—an opportunity to share reflections, laughter, and a toast to the unforgettable journey we’ve shared together before the culmination of our journey at Machu Picchu tomorrow.

Hotel:
Inkaterra El Mapi

Inkaterra El Mapi has a modern building design that makes you feel like you’re in a large metropolitan area, the spa and healthy buffet style breakfast will prepare you for a perfect Machu Picchu visit.

Today, we’ll venture into the heart of one of the world’s most awe-inspiring archaeological wonders—Machu Picchu. Nestled high in the cloud forest and veiled in mist, this ancient citadel invites us to step back in time. With our entry, we’ll follow two distinct circuits (depending on availability), allowing us to explore a greater portion of the site. These carefully designed routes reveal the incredible architectural ingenuity, sacred temples, agricultural terraces, and commanding views that have captivated visitors and scholars alike.

For those seeking an extra challenge, there’s an optional hike to Huayna Picchu, the towering peak that rises dramatically behind Machu Picchu. This strenuous climb winds up steep, narrow paths carved into the mountainside, ultimately rewarding hikers with panoramic vistas and access to remote structures hidden on the summit. Due to its difficulty and exposure, this hike is recommended only for experienced hikers with a strong sense of balance and no fear of heights. If interested, be sure to select “Extra Hikes” when booking your tour, as permits are limited.

After a day filled with exploration and wonder, we’ll board the afternoon train for our return to Cusco. Upon arrival, we’ll gather one last time for a farewell dinner, celebrating the unforgettable journey we’ve shared through the ancient lands and living cultures of Peru.

Today, you’ll bid Cusco farewell after our incredible journey. Those of you who are completing your journey here will fly to Lima to connect with your flights home, while those of you joining us for our optional Easter Island Extension (see itinerary below) will fly to Santiago to begin the next phase of our trip.

North Peru Extension

Leaving Lima behind once more, the journey heads north toward the early coastal settlements of Peru. The first stop is Vichama, one of the oldest urban centers in the region, where stepped platforms and remnants of adobe structures reveal the complexity of early civilization on the coast. Walking among the ruins, you can sense the ingenuity of communities that organized labor, agriculture, and social life long before the rise of the Inca.

After exploring Vichama, the route continues to Huara for a well-earned lunch, a moment to enjoy the coastal landscape and reflect on the day’s discoveries. The journey then winds toward Penico before settling in the Caral area for the night. The location allows an early start to visit the Sacred City of Caral the next morning, and offers a peaceful pause amid landscapes that have witnessed the rise of one of the oldest civilizations in the Americas.

The morning is dedicated to the Sacred City of Caral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the earliest urban centers in the Americas. Walking among its pyramids, plazas, and circular sunken courts, it’s possible to feel the rhythm of a civilization that flourished over 5,000 years ago. The scale and sophistication of Caral — including its complex irrigation systems and communal architecture — speak to a society capable of remarkable feats of planning and organization.

After Caral, the drive continues north to Huarmey for lunch, before visiting Las Aldas, another coastal settlement that offers insight into the region’s diversity of early cultures. The day concludes at Cerro Sechín, where carved stone reliefs depict warriors and ceremonial scenes, a striking testament to the symbolic and martial traditions of ancient Peru. Overnight in Casma provides a restful pause amid landscapes that have witnessed millennia of human endeavor.

The day begins with a visit to the Pampas de las Llamas, a site that blends ritual, residential, and agricultural spaces, giving a broad sense of early coastal life. From there, the journey moves to Taukachi Konkan and Sechín Bajo, where monumental stone constructions hint at the ceremonial and political ambitions of ancient societies. The layering of ruins and terraces reveals how communities built over centuries, leaving traces that continue to inspire fascination.

After lunch in Casma, the exploration continues with a visit to the Casma Museum, where artifacts help bring context to the monumental sites of the region. The day ends with a drive to Chankillo, home of the famous Thirteen Towers, an ancient solar observatory whose alignment with the sun underscores the early inhabitants’ sophisticated understanding of astronomy. Overnight in Huarmey allows for reflection on the interplay between human ingenuity and the surrounding landscape.

The morning opens with a visit to El Castillo de Huarmey, an impressive coastal fortress that illustrates defensive and ceremonial architecture in the region. The drive then continues to Fortaleza de Paramonga, a massive adobe fortress whose walls and terraces dominate the valley, providing a vivid sense of scale and strategy. A stop for lunch in the area allows for a pause amidst these monumental ruins before the journey turns inland toward the highlands.

Arriving in Huaraz in the evening, the contrast between desert coast and Andean mountains is striking. The day’s travels trace the evolution of ancient societies from coastal plains to mountainous terrain, offering a preview of the Andean cultures that will be explored in the coming days. Overnight in Huaraz sets the stage for tomorrow’s journey into Chavín, one of Peru’s most iconic archaeological sites.

A full day is devoted to Chavín de Huántar, one of the most influential ceremonial centers in ancient Peru. Hidden deep in the Andean highlands, this UNESCO site was a pilgrimage destination for centuries, its labyrinthine galleries designed to evoke awe and transformation. The Lanzón monolith, with its fusion of human and feline features, stands as a powerful symbol of duality and cosmic balance.

Exploring the plazas and underground chambers reveals not only a mastery of stone and acoustics but a sophisticated spiritual vision that united distant peoples. The day offers time to linger, to absorb the scale of Chavín’s mystery without hurry. The night in Huaraz is quiet and contemplative, surrounded by the peaks that once framed the beliefs of this ancient culture.

After breakfast, there’s time to take in the morning air of the Cordillera Blanca before transferring to the airport for the flight back to Lima. The short journey by air traces in minutes what took ancient traders days to traverse—descending from the high Andes to the wide Pacific plain below. From above, the landscape reveals its layers: snowcapped peaks, winding valleys, and the faint outlines of forgotten settlements that mark humanity’s long presence in these mountains.

Arriving in Lima, the expedition comes full circle. The group’s path has followed the evolution of Andean civilization—from the coastal builders of Caral to the highland visionaries of Chavín de Huántar—each culture leaving its mark on stone and memory. This final day offers space to reflect on the connections woven across millennia and landscapes, and the quiet continuity of life in the land once called the navel of the world.
