The Lares Trek to Machu Picchu is a scenic and culturally rich alternative to the Inca Trail, winding through remote Andean villages, dramatic mountain landscapes, and high-altitude passes before culminating in a visit to the iconic citadel.
The Lares Trek is one of the most beautiful trails in Peru, offering gorgeous landscapes and fascinating cultural experiences for those interested in a medium to challenging hike. Here you will encounter very few other travelers as you pass through the remote Andean countryside. We will continue through the valley of Pumahuanca where we will cross the Puma pass before reaching Cuncani and ending our trek with a relaxing bath in the hot springs of Lares.
During this hike we will pass through small villages which offer a rare and fascinating insight into the traditional life of the Andes. We’ll pass gorgeous green valleys, turquoise colored lakes, flocks of llamas, alpacas and sheep, enjoy stunning views of the snow-capped mountain peaks and meet locals wearing colorful traditional clothing. We will also get an insight into the ancient agricultural customs and traditional textile weaving of the area. On the third day we will travel by bus from Lares to the town of Ollantaytambo where we will catch the train to Aguas Calientes to spend the night. Finally, we will visit the archaeological sanctuary of Machu Picchu on a full guided tour before heading back to Cusco and concluding our tour.

We’ll pick you up early from your hotel and head to the Sacred Valley, stopping for a quick breakfast at a local restaurant. Restrooms are available, and you’ll have time to purchase any last-minute snacks and water. Afterward, we’ll travel by bus to the entrance of the Pumahuanca Valley, famous for its white corn crops and chicha, the traditional corn beer of the Incas. Here, we’ll meet our horses and horsemen, who will transport our belongings during the hike.
We’ll begin our trek through the stunning valley, where native queñua trees dominate the landscape. The path follows a gentle ascent, providing impressive views of the surrounding mountains. After about 3 to 4 hours of hiking, we’ll arrive at the archaeological site of Inca-Kancha, where we’ll explore the site and then enjoy our first traditional Andean lunch. Following a break, we’ll continue our hike through the woods to the community of Paccha, where we’ll be greeted by a breathtaking mountain landscape and herds of llamas, alpacas, and sheep. After an additional 2 hours of walking, passing several small waterfalls along the way, we’ll reach our campsite, Cuyoc, at an altitude of 4,010 meters above sea level.
We’ll begin the day early with a warm cup of coca tea before enjoying a delicious breakfast. Afterward, we’ll set out on our trek, with stunning views of the snow-capped peaks of Chicón, San Juan, and Verónica. Surrounded by lush woods, we’ll embark on a challenging five-hour climb, navigating steep stone steps and narrow curves until we reach the Pumahuanca Pass at an altitude of 4,780 meters. Along the way, we’ll pass several apachetas—stone piles left by travelers to honor the apus, or mountain gods. At the pass, we’ll follow local customs and offer coca leaves to the mountains as a tribute.
From the pass, we’ll be treated to views of Moray, Maras, and the nearby salt mines. After a brief rest, we’ll begin our descent, walking for about one hour along a stone path with breathtaking views on both sides. We’ll then arrive near some impressive lakes where we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch and take a short break. After lunch, we’ll continue our descent for two more hours, passing through fields where local farmers wear the colorful, traditional clothing of the Lares Valley. Our destination for the day is Cuncani, a community known for its handwoven textiles. Here, we’ll have the chance to enjoy a traditional dinner and camp at an altitude of 3,900 meters, surrounded by the serene beauty of the valley.
Today marks the last day of the Lares Trek, and it will be a more relaxed day, allowing you to sleep in a bit longer before enjoying a hearty breakfast. In the small village where we spent the night, we’ll have the chance to learn about traditional farming and weaving customs, as well as admire the local textiles. Afterward, we’ll begin our four-hour downhill walk, passing through scenic landscapes as we head toward the village of Lares, famous for its medicinal hot springs. Here, we’ll have the opportunity to unwind and enjoy a soothing hot bath.
Following a delicious lunch, we’ll travel by bus for three hours to the town of Ollantaytambo, where we’ll board the train to Aguas Calientes. The scenic train ride will take about two hours, offering beautiful views as we make our way toward the final destination of our journey.
Today is the day you’ve been waiting for!
We will pick you up early from your hotel in Aguas Calientes and begin our journey to the entrance of Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. As you approach this iconic site, you’ll be struck by its stunning location and remarkable architecture. Explore the plazas, temples, houses, and storage facilities that have stood the test of time for over 500 years. Despite exposure to the elements and frequent earthquakes, the sundials and stairs still stand strong, a testament to the precision and ingenuity of the Incas. Take your time to appreciate the incredible engineering feats that went into building such a majestic city high in the mountains.
After your visit, you’ll descend back to Aguas Calientes, where you can unwind and enjoy some free time. You may choose to relax in the hot springs (optional, not included), or explore the town, grab some lunch, or shop for souvenirs. In the late afternoon, we will board the train back to Cusco, carrying with us the memories of this unforgettable experience. As we travel back, you’ll reflect on the awe-inspiring journey through one of the world’s most famous and culturally rich destinations.
