The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is a breathtaking high-altitude adventure that traverses rugged mountain passes, lush cloud forests, and diverse ecosystems, offering a dramatic and scenic alternative to the traditional Inca Trail.
The Salkantay trek is a great alternative option if the traditional Inca Trail has no spaces left or if you are seeking for a more remote footpath that sees far less travelers and leads to a magnificent wilderness not seen on the other routes. The trail is only slightly more difficult than the traditional route, but with amazing sights of the Nevado de Salkantay and the tallest peak of the Cordillera at 6271m. Salkantay, name in the native language, means Savage Mountain, which may refer to the swirling clouds that rise up from the lowlands of the rainforest that engulf the peak. The mountains of the Cordillera Vilcabamba form a jagged chain between the Urubamba and the Apurimac rivers, creating a unique landscape to the area. On the north side of the cordillera, massive snow peaks emerge from lush tropical rain forests.

We begin the journey early in the morning with a pickup from your hotel, followed by a scenic drive to the small town of Mollepata (2,800 m / 9,186 ft). After a hearty breakfast in Mollepata, we’ll continue by car to Soraypampa (3,800 m / 12,467 ft), where we will settle into the comfortable cabins and leave our belongings. Once settled, we’ll begin our hike to the stunning Humantay Lake (4,200 m / 13,780 ft). This crystal-clear turquoise lake sits at the base of Humantay Mountain, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. We’ll have time to take in the beauty of the lake and snap some photos before descending back to Soraypampa.
After returning from the hike, we’ll enjoy a well-earned lunch. The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax and unwind in the comfortable cabins, taking in the spectacular mountain views. Later in the evening, we’ll gather for a delicious dinner, giving you time to reflect on the day’s journey and prepare for the more challenging days ahead. With the towering presence of Salkantay Mountain surrounding us, Soraypampa offers a peaceful setting to rest and recharge for the adventure that lies ahead.
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll begin the day with a steep ascent toward Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft), the highest point of the trek. This is the most physically demanding section of the journey, but it rewards us with breathtaking views of Salkantay Mountain, its towering glaciers, and the vast wilderness around us. Along the way, we’ll encounter small lakes, glaciers, and an ever-changing landscape, rich in flora and fauna. The first part of the hike will take approximately 5 hours, with plenty of breaks to catch our breath and soak in the spectacular scenery.
After reaching the pass, we’ll begin our descent into the cloud forest, where the environment becomes lush and tropical. The change in climate is striking as we pass through streams, waterfalls, and dense vegetation. By the late afternoon, we’ll arrive at Colpapampa (2,950 m / 9,678 ft), a small village nestled in a lush valley. We’ll spend the night in domes, offering a unique and comfortable experience in the heart of nature. This area marks the transition from high mountain terrain to subtropical landscapes.
After breakfast, we start the third day with a scenic descent into the heart of the cloud forest. The trail takes us through dense jungle, with views of coffee plantations, banana trees, and a variety of tropical fruits, including passionfruit and coca plants. The lush environment is rich in biodiversity, offering glimpses of local wildlife, such as colorful birds and insects. We’ll stop for lunch at La Playa, a small riverside settlement surrounded by lush vegetation. This is a great spot to relax and enjoy a hearty meal.
In the afternoon, we continue the journey with a short vehicle transfer to Santa Teresa, a town known for its natural beauty and relaxing hot springs. Upon arrival, you’ll check into a comfortable hotel, where you can unwind and enjoy the serene atmosphere. You may also choose to visit the thermal baths in Santa Teresa (optional), which are perfect for soothing your muscles after the long hike. In the evening, we’ll have a delicious dinner and spend the night in this peaceful, tranquil location.
After breakfast, we’ll begin the day with a vehicle transfer to the starting point of our trek. For those seeking a more challenging experience, an optional detour to Llactapata is available. This hike involves a steep ascent to an ancient Inca site, offering breathtaking views of Machu Picchu from a unique vantage point. If you choose to take this detour, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramas before we descend and continue toward the Hydroelectric Station.
Once we arrive at the Hydroelectric Station, we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch before starting our trek. Afterward, we’ll follow a relatively flat trail that runs along the railroad tracks leading to Aguas Calientes. This section of the trek passes through lush jungle landscapes, with views of the river, waterfalls, and distant mountains. By the late afternoon, we’ll arrive in Aguas Calientes, where we’ll check into a comfortable hotel. The evening is free to explore the town, have dinner, and rest up for tomorrow’s visit to Machu Picchu.
On the final day of the trek, we’ll enjoy an early breakfast before taking the bus to Machu Picchu. Once we arrive at this awe-inspiring site, you will embark on a comprehensive guided tour, where your expert guide will lead you through some of the most significant and iconic areas of the ancient citadel. During this enriching experience, you’ll hear about the fascinating history, intricate construction techniques, and the many intriguing mysteries surrounding Machu Picchu. As you explore, you’ll also have the opportunity to take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, lush valleys, and remarkable Inca architecture. The guide will provide insightful commentary, helping you gain a deeper understanding of the site’s cultural, historical, and spiritual significance.
After the tour, you’ll have some free time to relax, take in the atmosphere, and enjoy a delicious meal in Aguas Calientes before we catch our return train. Once you arrive at the station, our team will be waiting to pick you up and transport you back to your hotel. The rest of the evening will allow you to unwind and reflect on the unforgettable journey you’ve just completed, from the stunning Salkantay Trek to the majestic Machu Picchu. The memories of these incredible experiences will stay with you long after the trip has ended.
