Our adventure begins early in the morning, with departure from Cusco between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. On the way, we will stop at a restaurant to enjoy a typical breakfast. After approximately 40 minutes of driving, we reach Pomacanchi Lagoon, a beautiful highland lake surrounded by stunning Andean landscapes—perfect for a short scenic break and some photos.
About an hour later, we arrive at the village of Wayki, a community with deep ancestral roots dating back to both Inca and colonial times. Here we meet our muleteers, and after a brief introduction to the area, we begin our hike toward Waqrapukara. The trek takes around 3 to 4 hours along an ancient Inca trail that leads directly to the archaeological site. Along the way, we’ll enjoy panoramic views of the imposing Apurímac Canyon and its surrounding beauty. We finally reach a viewpoint facing Waqrapukara, where our campsite and a well-earned dinner await us.
After a good breakfast, we begin our guided exploration of the Waqrapukara archaeological complex, which lasts approximately 2 to 3 hours. During this time, we’ll discover the site’s impressive ceremonial structures and ancient Inca architecture. Once the visit is complete, we return to our camp to enjoy lunch.
Once lunch is finished, we have two options for the return journey. The first is to retrace our steps along the same path back to the village of Wayki, where our transport will be waiting. The second option takes us along an alternative route, descending on a different Inca trail. This path includes a visit to a Pre-Inca/Inca cemetery and leads us all the way down to the Sacred Apurímac River. There, our transport will meet us for the drive back to Cusco, with an estimated arrival around 7:00 p.m.
