Begin your day early for an adventurous trip to Pallay Poncho, a stunning, lesser-known rainbow-colored mountain in Peru’s remote Layo district of the Cusco region. After a scenic drive through high-altitude plains and Quechua villages, the hike starts at over 4,000 meters.
At the summit, you’ll see Pallay Poncho’s dramatic, multicolored ridges in deep reds, greens, ochres, and purples, forming a surreal landscape. Unlike the crowded Vinicunca, its isolation provides a peaceful, immersive experience.

Set out early in the morning for an off-the-beaten-path journey to Pallay Poncho, one of Peru’s most striking geological wonders. Located in the remote Layo district of the Cusco region, this rainbow-hued mountain—also known as “Apu Taqllo”—is named after the vibrant patterns of a traditional Andean poncho. After a scenic drive through high-altitude plains and remote Quechua villages, you’ll begin the hike at over 4,000 m.a.s.l. The trail climbs gently, revealing alpacas, rolling hills, and snowy peaks—challenging but rewarding.
As you approach the summit, the sharp ridges of Pallay Poncho come into view, streaked with rich mineral colors—deep reds, ochres, greens, and purples—creating a surreal, almost otherworldly landscape. With striking formations and fewer crowds than Vinicunca, this remote mountain offers a quieter, more scenic adventure. After exploring, you'll descend and return to Cusco by evening.
